Torre Carrari

The Vertical Jewel.

Built between the 12th and 13th century, this tower represents one of the 20 towers built by wealthy families still standing in the centre of Bologna.Its façades are in Via Marchesana and have been touched up over the centuries but are still as splendid as they originally were.

The putlog holes and perimeter are unchanged features of the medieval design, unlike the ogival arched door which dates back to the end of the 14th century. The Torre dei Carrari is a living symbol of the glorious past of this city, where the families contended with each other for prestige by conquering metres of sky.
